This course is designed to go beyond just theoretical content—it’s all about preparing you for the real world and making you hirable in the recreation industry. In addition to learning key concepts and practices, you’ll also have the opportunity to earn industry certifications that set you apart as a job candidate.
We’ve partnered with the Recreation Facilities Association of BC to offer certifications in Pool Operator Levels 1 and 2, as well as Refrigeration Safety Awareness. These certifications are highly valued in the industry and are essential for those looking to work in facility management roles, especially in pools and arenas. By the end of this course, you’ll not only have a solid understanding of the field but also the practical qualifications that employers are looking for. This combination of knowledge and hands-on credentials will give you a competitive edge as you begin your career in recreation!
In this course, your assignments and in-course exams will do more than just contribute to your final grade—they also play a key role in earning your industry certifications. To qualify for the Pool Operator Levels 1 and 2 and Refrigeration Safety Awareness certifications through the Recreation Facilities Association of BC (RFABC), you’ll need to score 75% or higher on the relevant assessments.
If you meet that threshold, you’ll be eligible for the RFABC certification, giving you the credentials to operate pools and arenas—a significant asset for your career. However, if you don’t reach the 75% mark, don’t worry! You can still pass the course and gain valuable knowledge, but you won’t be certified to operate these facilities.
You will also be receiving training that is recognized by the BC Municipal Safety Association as part of this course, specifically the ‘Due Diligence for Supervisors’ workshop. This forms part of the Safety Supervisor Certification from the BCMSA that Recreation Leadership Diploma students receive upon graduation.
This system is designed to help ensure that you’re not only learning the material but also demonstrating the level of proficiency needed to work safely and effectively in recreation facilities. It’s a great way to tie what we’re learning in class directly to the practical skills employers are looking for!
